Resettled Rohingya Refugee from Burma

Abdul Hamid is the Refugee Congress Delegate for Wisconsin.

He is a resettled Rohingya refugee, originally from the country of Burma. Due to the extreme discrimination of the Rohingya people, Hamid fled to Malaysia to escape persecution and arbitrary arrest. In 2015, he came to the United States through a refugee resettlement program.

Hamid has more than ten years of experience running community-based organizations. He is an activist and human defender, and the founding president of the Rohingya Society in Malaysia (RSM). Under his leadership, RSM collaborated with many refugee advocacy groups, such as UNHCR Malaysia, International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC), and Refugees International.

Before coming to the U.S., Hamid successfully managed various community development projects that benefited hundreds of women, men, and children. Some of these projects included English literature classes for adults, basic computer classes for youth, working at a healthcare shelter for vulnerable refugee patients, and tailoring clothes for single mothers.

As part of an advocacy and human rights awareness campaign, Hamid facilitated many interviews between well-known organizations and media entities, and asylum seekers, victims of human trafficking, and refugees.

Hamid graduated with a major in chemistry from the University of Yangon. He studied further in Malaysia, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of phytochemistry from the University of Science Malaysia. Hamid did not get a chance to work in Malaysia, due to not being able to obtain a valid Myanmar passport.

Currently, Hamid lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he works at Aurora Healthcare as a nationally certified medical interpreter.  He is one of the founding members of the national organization United Stateless. He also served as president of the nonprofit organization Burmese Rohingya Community of Wisconsin. Hamid is a vocal supporter of his people, and is dedicated to aiding resettled refugees in Milwaukee as they transition to living life in the United States.

In his free time, Hamid loves to read and follow the news, especially news about the status of the Rohingya in Burma.
