Delegate for Texas
Resettled Refugee from Burundi

Alexis Niyonkuru is the Refugee Congress Delegate for Texas. He came to Houston, Texas, as a refugee from Burundi in 2007.

Because of the difficult situation he faced as a refugee, Alexis and friends volunteered and founded UBAHO (United Burundian-Refugee Association of Houston), to assist Burundian and other refugee groups in Houston. He currently serves as the Personnel Director of UBAHO and as the General Secretary of Burundian Community of Houston.

Alexis joined the Gary Job Corps Center shortly after arrival in the U.S. and earned his high school diploma, Personal Care Assistance Certificate and a certification in transportation and business communications within a few years. He is proud of the time he spends listening to community members, translating and interpreting, and directing them to the right resources based on their needs and spending time with his kids.
