Marcela A. Ortega

Marcela A. Ortega
Delegate for Florida
Resettled Refugee from Honduras

Marcela A. Ortega is a human rights defender and advocate for civil and political rights. Originally from Honduras, her passion for activism took root when she co-founded and organized the Indignant Opposition Citizen Movement — the Torch movement. In this capacity, she fearlessly exposed government corruption in Honduras, conducting citizen audits to empower individuals to actively participate in fostering positive change.

Marcela came to the US as a refugee in 2017. In her ongoing pursuit of creating a better life for herself and assisting other forcibly displaced people, Marcela founded the School for Migrants, an organization dedicated to helping newcomers adapt to life in the US and become productive members of society. Her passion for citizen participation remains undeterred, fueled by her own experiences and the belief that collective action can drive meaningful change.

As a Refugee Congress Delegate, she aims to leverage her experiences and expertise to support and empower other refugees and asylum seekers. Her dedication to citizen participation is both a testament to her resilience and a beacon of hope for those striving for justice and a brighter future.
