Tek Darnal and his family fled Bhutan in 1992 to escape persecution, and were resettled to the United States in 2008. Now he owns his own home and business in Evanston, Illinois, where he resides with his wife and two sons. Tek is quite active in his community helping other refugees as both a resettlement aid for Catholic Charities, and as an active member of Bhutanese Community Association of Illinois (BCAI). He also works as an environmental technician for Aramark Corporation at a local hospital. Tek is most proud of contributing to his community by forming the Bhutanese Community Association of Illinois.
