Dr. Kamal Bewar is the Refugee Congress Delegate for Utah. He was born in Kurdistan of Iraq, and later resettled in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a refugee. Confronting the many challenges of adapting to a new country, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of education and personal growth. Through perseverance and commitment, he earned a Doctorate in Higher Educational Leadership.
A dedicated educator, community advocate, and cultural leader, Dr. Bewar is the founder and current Vice President of the Kurdish Community of Utah. In this role, he has been instrumental in advancing the well-being of Kurdish Americans and other immigrant populations, providing essential resources, advocacy, and leadership to foster inclusion, empowerment, and cultural preservation.
Dr. Bewar brings over a decade of professional experience in teaching and community service. He served for more than nine years as an Assistant Professor with the U.S. Department of Defense, where he taught Kurdish language, Middle Eastern culture, and language acquisition fundamentals to adult professionals. Currently, he continues his impactful work at Salt Lake Community College, focusing on student success, mentoring, and educational equity.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Bewar is a devoted husband and a proud father.
His life and work reflect a deep commitment to education, cross-cultural understanding, and the advancement of underrepresented communities.
