Chitkar Mero (My Shriek) - A New Nepali Song in Tribute to My Father
Chitkar Mero (My Shriek) - A New Nepali Song in Tribute to My Father
By Refugee Congress Honorary Delegate Kamal Dhimal
The Nepali-speaking people in Bhutan were agitating against the oppression, suppression, exploitation, and ban on Nepali language, customs, culture, and religion by the Bhutanese government against them in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
During the agitation, many were beaten, some women were raped, and some people were killed in jails by the government. During this time, Mr. Tikaram Dhimal, a resident of Lalai Block, Sarbhang District, was arrested and sent to jail from his home at midnight on December 12, 1990. He died a year later in Gelephu Prison due to brutal torture.
Tikaram was my father. I present this heart-rending song Chitkar Mero (My Shriek), adorned with my words and the music and voice of Shishir Yogi, in memory of the late Tikaram Dhimal, based on the true story of what happened.
This shriek is a true dedication to the hundreds of Tikaram Dhimals who were martyred in the battle for their identities.
