Refugee Congress Applauds the Announcement that Asylum-Seekers Under the “Remain in Mexico” Policy Will Have Their Cases Heard

WASHINGTON--Refugee Congress applauds the announcement that asylum-seekers whose cases were closed under the Migrant Protection Protocols -- known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy -- will now get a chance to pursue asylum in the U.S.
The Trump-era “Remain in Mexico” policy left thousands of asylum-seekers under desperate and unsafe conditions. On Wednesday, the Biden administration began to allow the first of those with closed cases to pursue their asylum claims.
As an organization built and led by refugees and asylum-seekers, Refugee Congress knows firsthand the importance of a humane protection system and policies that provide safety and welcome for those fleeing violence and persecution. We applaud the movement away from the dangerous and inhumane “Remain in Mexico” policy.
Refugee Congress calls for further steps to safeguard the lives and wellbeing of children, families and adults seeking asylum, including ending the Title 42 policy, which continues to be used to expel families and adults to danger in Mexico and the countries they fled, under the guise of protecting public health.
