Refugee Congress Celebrates International Women’s Day
For Immediate Release: March 8, 2022
WASHINGTON–Today Refugee Congress joins with others around the world to honor International Women’s Day, a day to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges and focus attention on women’s rights and gender equity.
“Throughout history, women have been a powerful force for change in the world,” said Nili Sarit Yossinger, Executive Director of Refugee Congress. “From civil rights to scientific innovation, from social justice to gender equity, we celebrate the achievements of women in our communities throughout this month and always.”
This year’s international theme is #BreakTheBias, which focuses on building a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination with equitable and inclusive access for all.
“Dear women, daughters, mothers and sisters, I applaud you for holding the space for the whole world. You are peaceful, productive and bold. You are worthy and deserving no matter what. You are not takers; you are givers,” said Drocella Mugorewera, Refugee Congress Board Member.
"Women have been a powerful force driving social justice movements. From labor rights, racial discrimination, pay equality, gender equality, sexual assault and sexual harassment to climate change, women have catapulted these issues into public spaces and created effective change. For International Women's Day, I celebrate women trailblazers and changemakers who continue to improve the lives for all women,” said Nga Vương-Sandoval, Refugee Congress Delegate for Colorado.
In honor of International Women’s Day, Refugee Congress and Refugee Council USA are cosponsoring a virtual event at 7:30pm ET tonight. #BreakTheBias: Refugee Women in Leadership, a roundtable discussion featuring Refugee Congress Board Members and Delegates. Register here, or watch on Facebook Live.
“Biases against women have made many women shy away from taking a leadership position in their communities and have kept them out of seats at tables where decisions are made for their communities. Biases against women have made many women forego their dreams. Break the Bias!” said Matilda Issata Sawie, Refugee Congress Delegate for Pennsylvania.
“Women are the embodiment of valor. Happy Women's Day to every strong woman out there! You make the world a better place everyday,” said Sharon Njie, Refugee Congress Delegate for Louisiana.
