Refugee Congress Celebrates the End of Title 42
For Immediate Release: November 17, 2022
On November 15, 2022, U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan issued a decision that formally ended Title 42, a Trump-era policy that expelled people seeking asylum at the U.S. border, sending them back to danger under the guise of public health needs for the last two and a half years. Refugee Congress praised the Biden Administration earlier this year for announcing an intention to end this harmful and ineffective policy. As an organization built and led by people who have experienced forced displacement, we are pleased to see today’s court ruling that deemed Title 42 unlawful and strongly urge the administration to proceed immediately with overturning the harmful practice of expelling asylum seekers at our border.
“Title 42 has been an abhorrent policy and a blatant attempt to expel those seeking asylum at our borders. We are pleased to see yesterday's ruling but concerned by the decision to put the ruling on hold, per the administration's request. We strongly encourage the administration to remove any further barriers to ending Title 42 and move forward immediately with undoing the harm it has caused. As a nation of welcome, we have an obligation to ensure that asylum seekers are able to access protection – let’s remember this and do better,” said Nili Sarit Yossinger, Executive Director
“Ending title 42 was one of Biden’s campaign promises. We strongly encourage the administration tol keep this promise without any further delays,” said Ali Aljundi, Member Engagement and Leadership Development Manager.
