Refugee Congress Commemorates World Refugee Day

For immediate release: June 20, 2021

WASHINGTON--Today and throughout the month of June, we join together for World Refugee Day to celebrate and honor refugees and continue our advocacy for the refugee resettlement program.

As an organization built and led by former refugees, asylees and other vulnerable migrants, we know firsthand that the refugee resettlement program is a critical life-saving program. This World Refugee Day, we reflect on what #RestoringWelcome means for our communities.

Refugee Congress Delegates, Associate Delegates and Honorary Delegates across the country have been organizing advocacy and outreach events in honor of World Refugee Day, but their work never stops. These dedicated volunteers spend their time and energy working to highlight the importance of refugee resettlement programs across the globe, and ensuring the wellbeing and dignity for refugees, asylum-seekers and other vulnerable migrants.

This World Refugee Day, we join together with partners and other organizations to highlight and uplift the stories and voices of refugees. We encourage organizations and individuals to get involved with and uplift World Refugee Day actions and events from Refugee Congress and use the RCUSA World Refugee Day 2021 Organizational Handbook to raise awareness.

"The atrocities of war and our survival are a fragment of our stories. It’s crucial to recognize that our culture, cuisines, diversity and talents are gifts we’ve shared with our neighbors in our new homes. For World Refugee Day, I celebrate the countless ways that refugees enrich our communities." - Nga Vương-Sandoval, Refugee Congress Delegate for Colorado

"World Refugee Day gives us an opportunity to uplift the voices of the millions of refugees around the world who are forced to flee their homes and have to seek refuge. We must acknowledge that these precious lives are still facing extremely dangerous conditions, and we must continue to advocate for the rights of those seeking safety, freedom and refuge."  -  Nejra Sumic Refugee Congress Delegate for Arizona

Refugee Congress is a nonpartisan advocacy organization built and led by former refugees, asylum-seekers and other vulnerable migrants to promote the well-being, integration and dignity of all vulnerable migrants. With delegates across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, we use our voices and experiences to inform and influence decision-makers on critical domestic and international issues that affect our communities.
