Refugee Congress Urges the Biden Administration to Sign a Revised FY21 Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions Immediately

WASHINGTON–Refugee Congress urges the Biden Administration to sign a revised FY21 Presidential Determination (PD) on refugee admissions immediately.
The Biden Administration recently proposed an increase to this year’s refugee admissions goal to 62,500 refugees, but there remains no signed PD. Each day that passes by without a signed PD is another day vulnerable refugees remain in limbo, often in unsafe conditions and separated from their families.
The Trump administration sought to destroy refugee resettlement by cutting the refugee admission to an all-time low of just 15,000 for Fiscal Year 2021 and lowering the level by more than 80 percent. It is critical that the Biden Administration continue the swift effort in restoring welcome and protecting refugee resettlement. Now is the time to dismantle Trump’s discriminatory policies and provide safety to thousands of refugees awaiting resettlement.
As an organization built and led by refugees, asylees and other vulnerable migrants, we know firsthand that the refugee resettlement program is a critical life-saving program with historic bipartisan support that has allowed refugees to leave unsafe conditions and find safety and protection.
We urge the Biden Administration to restore our nation’s history of welcome and immediately restore refugee resettlement by signing the revised refugee admissions goal for FY21.
