Refugee Congress Welcomes Supreme Court Decision Allowing End of ‘Remain in Mexico’
For Immediate Release: June 30, 2022
WASHINGTON–Refugee Congress welcomes today’s decision by the Supreme Court that allows for the end of the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), also known as ‘Remain in Mexico.’
The Remain in Mexico policy has placed thousands of people in danger by denying people seeking asylum entry to the U.S. and forcing them to await their U.S. court dates in Mexico, where they often face dangerous conditions with threats of violence, kidnappings and homelessness. Policies like this also set the stage for horrific tragedies like the recent death of more than 50 migrants in a truck in San Antonio.
The Biden administration took steps to end the Trump-era Remain in Mexico policy but then restarted it in December after a lower court’s ruling.
Today’s decision is an important step towards building a system of welcome and dignity for people seeking asylum, and we call for the Biden administration to now swiftly end the Remain in Mexico policy.
“Asylum-seekers are people – humans like you and me – but they don't have anywhere to return to because they are at risk of losing their lives in their countries of origin,” said Valdir Solera, Jr., Refugee Congress Delegate for Hawaii.
We are hopeful for a swift end of MPP, and we also call for the end of Title 42, another Trump-era policy that endangers the lives of vulnerable families and individuals seeking safety.
We call on our nation’s leaders to reject policies that subject people who are seeking safety to further risk of violence or death. We can and must be a nation that welcomes people seeking refuge with dignity and humanity.
