Aisha Koroma

Born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, Aisha Koroma is a trauma-responsive mental health and social services professional dedicated to empowering marginalized populations globally. A survivor of war, Aisha migrated to the United States as a refugee in her early teens.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Houston-Downtown, a master’s in counseling from Prairie View A&M University, and specialized training in Trauma-Informed Care (TIC), Community-Based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS-CB), and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) from Harvard Medical School, the World Health Organization (WHO), and John Hopkins University respectively.

A founding member of the first refugee mental health clinic in Texas, Aisha aided in the establishment of the first Refugee Mental Health & Wellness Conference and co-facilitated the first cross-cultural refugee women support groups benefiting women from Afghanistan, Congo, Syria, Bhutan, Iraq, and Pakistan. Aisha is a contributing author of the Handbook of Refugee Experience: Trauma, Resilience, and Recovery published in 2019 and Co-Researcher of the Health Equity article on the Impact of COVID-19 on an Urban Refugee Population published in National Library of Medicine.

Aisha is currently the Assistant Director of Social Integration at HIAS for US Programs and previously served as an MHPSS Consultant with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Qatar where she developed crucial MHPSS and GBV initiatives and established the first therapeutic safe room in a camp setting in that region.

As a renowned advocate, Aisha uses her story and expertise to amplify refugee voices globally.
