Geeta Farahmand Rahimi is the Refugee Congress Delegate for Texas. She is a former Special Immigration Visa (SIV) Holder from Afghanistan who came to the United States in 2015 to save her and her family’s lives from terrorist groups.

Geeta worked as Training Methodology Director and Public Service Delivery Senior Specialist with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) projects in Afghanistan. In both projects, she delivered trainings to enhance the capacity of municipal officials and community members in management, good governance, transparency, community engagement, gender equality, and women and youth involvement in municipal decision-making.

She also worked as Senior Education Officer with Save the Children International, where she advocated for children’s rights by delivering child rights trainings and establishing Parent, Teacher, and Student Committees at schools.

Additionally, she worked as a Program Assistant with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Afghanistan, where she supported marginalized groups and internally displaced populations within Afghanistan. She was a women’s rights and human rights activist while working as Senior Training and Program Officer with Association of Defense for Women Rights a National Organization in Afghanistan.

Her journey working in the field of refugee resettlement started in 2019 in the U.S., when she started working as a Resettlement Case Manager with Refugee Services of Texas. Currently, she works as Resettlement Program Supervisor with Refugee Services of Texas and has the privilege of welcoming refugees and helping them resettle and achieve self-sufficiency in their new homes.

Geeta has a bachelor’s degree in Literature from Afghanistan. In her free time, she likes to spend time with her family and watch movies.

“My lived experience as an SIV holder has made me a strong advocate for refugees and immigrants, since I know the challenges refugees face in their home countries and navigating their lives in their new host countries. This is why I speak to the challenges and success of being an immigrant and use my experience to shine a light on the situation of immigrants in the U.S.  My history of community service and my experience as an advocate make up the foundation of who I am today.”
