Asylee from Venezuela

Johan Alberto Trujillo Loaiza is the Refugee Congress Delegate for Arkansas.

Johan is an asylee from Venezuela, arriving in the U.S. in 2019. Johan sought asylum in the U.S. due to a massive economic and political crisis in Venezuela, where public sector workers were persecuted and forced to defend the government against their will.

Johan has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering and Business Administration from the Universidad Rafael Belloso Chacin and studied to become a Trainer of Trainers at the National Training Institute of Venezuela. He speaks English and Spanish, as well as reads and writes Braille in both languages.

While in Venezuela, Johan developed his career, combining his talents in technology and workforce training with his commitment to serving those with disabilities, especially those with visual impairments and blindness. He was a Specialist Leader and Trainer for the state-owned oil company in Venezuela, where he helped implement the utilization of software to develop and train employees with disabilities in English and Spanish. Previously, he was a Commercial Representative/Sales Representative, where he traveled to multiple countries promoting and selling Braille technology and screen reading software to government and private sector decision makers. Additionally, he worked in Carabobo, Venezuela, to establish a project to increase accessibility for those with visual impairments and blindness in government buildings, such as libraries and schools.

Today, Johan uses his professional background and his personal experience to advocate for asylee and refugee rights, education, and healthcare. He also focuses on working with and advocating for refugees and asylees with visual impairments and blindness, who face additional challenges when establishing themselves in the U.S. and searching for employment.
