2024 Election Promise: Reaffirming Our Commitment to the Safety and Protection of all Newcomers

As Americans and communities around the globe await the final result of the US presidential election, Refugee Congress joins Refugee Council USA (RCUSA) and its member organizations in our shared commitment to advocating for and preserving the rights and well-being of new Americans, individuals awaiting permanent legal status, and all people seeking the safety they deserve, regardless of which administration comes to office. We will continue to honor the contributions of our neighbors, defend the legal right to seek asylum, and uphold the basic values of human dignity and welcome that reside at the heart of our nation.

We call for a peaceful transition of power, a hallmark of our democracy that ensures stability and continuity. In this pivotal moment, it is essential that all leaders—local, state, and federal—demonstrate a commitment to upholding the values that define our nation: compassion, inclusion, and respect for human dignity. Our commitment to these principles must be unwavering, particularly for those seeking refuge and a new life in the United States.

Now, more than ever, we need robust leadership that prioritizes the safety and well-being of forcibly displaced people. Seeking asylum is a legal and human right. Refugee resettlement is a time-honored and life-saving process that provides the building blocks for a life of promise and is a founding principle of the United States of America. The right to seek asylum is protected by both domestic and international law. Refugees and asylees are individuals and families who contribute richly to the social and economic fabric of our communities. We stand ready to collaborate with the new administration to ensure that the US Refugee Admissions Program remains a beacon of hope for those in need.

As we navigate the post-election landscape, let us come together to foster an environment of unity and understanding. We call upon all elected officials to recognize the strength that comes from diversity and the importance of welcoming those seeking safety. Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate future, where every person—regardless of their origin—has the opportunity to thrive. The RCUSA coalition remains steadfast in our mission to support and uplift all those seeking safety and a new beginning in the US.
