Refugee Congress committed to amplifying voices, defending rights, and building bridges during second Trump administration
On November 5th, former president Donald Trump was elected for a second presidential term.
Refugee Congress reiterates its firm commitment to refugees, asylum seekers, and all forcibly displaced people and communities in the United States and around the world. We remain dedicated to protecting the rights of displaced people, defending the safety and well-being of those seeking safety, and creating welcoming and inclusive spaces at local, state, national and international levels.
We recognize that this election’s outcome may have consequential impacts on refugees and displaced communities, as they are the ones who will be most affected by both proposed and expected policies of the new administration, which would aim to restrict access to asylum and immigration, separate families, and weaken basic civil and human rights. We have seen in the months leading up to this election how false narratives, misinformation, campaigning against refugees, and promises of mass deportation have already harmed communities of newcomers.
Americans are known for our generosity and willingness to step up and help our most vulnerable neighbors. We have seen this recently when a significant number of people volunteered to support Afghan and Ukranian refugees who were displaced by persecution and war. Welcoming refugees is a deeply held value and is supported by a majority of Americans. Now, more than ever, our country must hold on to these values.
We invite our communities and neighbors across the country to stand with our refugee and immigrant neighbors. We call on elected officials - regardless of political affiliation - to defend the rights of our most vulnerable community members. We insist that the incoming administration act in full responsibility of its duty, shedding divisive and harmful anti-immigrant rhetoric, and committing to unite the country on shared values of welcome and protecting those seeking safety.
"We are gravely concerned about the policies and extreme measures that the Trump administration may impose on vulnerable refugee communities. We remain steadfast and committed to do everything we can to protect refugee resettlement and humanitarian protections, and those who are most vulnerable. As former refugees, we have lived through many difficult obstacles in our lives, and our commitment as advocates is unwavering to those who are still seeking protection. We will continue to fight for human rights, justice from oppression, and safety for those who are forcibly displaced," said Nejra Sumic, Delegate for Arizona.
“Refugees and immigrants are not just numbers on a page, we are individuals with dreams, resilience, and a deep desire to contribute,” said Tika Bhandari, Delegate for Iowa. “Our courage enriches our nation, and our stories remind everyone that the strength of America lies in its diversity and commitment to offering a second chance to those in need.”
"With the new administration and proposed policies that would harm refugee and immigrant communities, we will not fall into fear or hopelessness,” said Sara Deewa, Delegate for New Mexico. “Instead, we will remain organized, resilient, committed and stronger as we continue our journey supporting immigrant and refugee communities. Together, we can create positive change to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive and access to safety."
“In times of uncertainties, I believe we have to remind ourselves of all the great people in our communities who support us, love us, advocate for us, and call us family. We do not have any options but to be hopeful about the unknown future and work a bit harder to have a long term impact,” said Aarozo Farhad, Delegate for Arkansas.
“With the results of the 2024 elections, we have an opportunity to build relationships and collaborate with leaders at all levels. Together, we will continue our work to advocate for the dignity, safety, and well-being of all displaced communities. We remain resilient and focused as we move forward,” said Alimas Hussein, Delegate for Northern California.
“As a nonpartisan organization, we are committed to working with different administrations and elected officials at the local and national levels. We look forward to working with and building relationships at all levels of government to strengthen support for refugees and all displaced people,” said Sohrab Sharghi, Board Member.
“In times of change, our commitment to supporting refugees and asylum seekers remains steadfast. We believe in the power of coming together, sharing stories, and building bridges across communities,” said Atem Aleu, Delegate for Utah. “Refugee voices bring unique insights, and we invite allies to join us as we continue to educate, advocate, and strengthen our communities. Now more than ever, it’s time to stand together, learn from one another, and invite our communities to stand with us in advocating for hope and opportunity.”
"Every election is a reflection of our values as a society, a chance to reaffirm or reconsider how we support those who come seeking safety, opportunity, and a fresh start. For refugees, immigrants, those underrepresented, and those of us who advocate alongside them, it is a reminder to continue working for inclusivity, understanding, and policy that respects the dignity of all,” said Rose Lokwang, Delegate for Ohio. "Though the results may not reflect the inclusive vision we hoped for, our work continues. Advocacy is not defined by a single election but by our ongoing commitment to ensuring that refugees, immigrants, and our underrepresented communities find safety, belonging, and opportunity. We will keep moving forward, amplifying voices, building bridges, and standing with those who need us most."
“At this critical moment, we recognize the weight of the challenges that lie ahead for our communities. Policies may change and obstacles may arise, but our resolve remains unshaken. Refugee Congress is not going anywhere. We are here to protect, to uplift, and to stand by those seeking safety, dignity, and a new beginning,” said Nili Sarit Yossinger, Executive Director. “As we confront the uncertainties ahead, our Delegates, whose resilience, courage, and expertise fuel our work, will continue to stand strong, advocate fiercely, and persist in our mission to ensure the safety and well-being of all who have been forcibly displaced.”
