Immediate Action on Work Permit Backlog Is Critical to Economic Growth
On August 7th, Refugee Congress and 205 other national, state, and local organizations submitted a letter calling on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to swiftly issue work authorizations to as many eligible applicants as possible before the current administration ends. This action is crucial to enabling asylum seekers and other newcomers to continue driving economic growth for years to come.
“Addressing the work permit backlog is essential for the well-being of individuals and families who are integral to our communities. With over 1.6 million people waiting for work permits, livelihoods are on hold. These delays are creating barriers that prevent families from accessing essential needs like food, shelter, and healthcare,” said Nili Sarit Yossinger, Executive Director. “USCIS has shown it can tackle backlogs effectively. By prioritizing work permit processing now, we can ensure individuals have the stability to support their families and contribute fully to our economy and society.”
