Refugee Congress Expresses Deep Concern over President Biden’s Endorsement of Extreme Changes to US Asylum System

January 29th, 2024 — Refugee Congress is deeply concerned by President Biden’s recent endorsement of extreme and dangerous changes proposed for the US asylum system in Senate negotiations.

In a statement issued Friday, January 26th, the President conveyed support for proposed measures that would implement inhumane policies and establish what he termed the “toughest” border security measures in US history. The ongoing negotiations have not yet been made public, but reportedly include proposals for expedited deportations, heightened requirements for asylum requests, and granting the President authority to close the border, a commitment he asserted to fulfill "the day I sign the bill into law."

This endorsement contradicts the Administration’s initial commitment to safeguarding refugees and immigrants and represents a departure from American values of welcoming and providing safety for those fleeing persecution and danger. Rather than addressing the root issues at the border, the proposed changes would instead create more chaos, exacerbate existing immigration pathway backlogs, and further endanger the lives of families.

"President Biden's endorsement of extreme changes and threats to 'shut down the border' undermines the fundamental right to seek asylum. We must advocate for the protection of asylum and remind our leaders that the safety of asylum seekers cannot be compromised," said Sharon Njie, Delegate for Louisiana and Co-Chair of the Advocacy & Communications Committee.

“The immigration court backlog passed 3 million asylum-pending cases. Behind every case are families in the US waiting for a resolution. People who arrived years ago and have already made a life here deserve a response in their cases and the answer should be expedited,” said Andreina Zuluaga, Delegate for New Jersey.

“These measures risk compromising our values and humanitarian obligations,” said Som Subedi, Honorary Delegate for Oregon. “It is crucial that we prioritize compassion and uphold the principles of asylum, ensuring the safety of those seeking refuge.”

“As a former refugee I take the stance that we need to remain a beacon of hope and refuge for those fleeing persecution,” said Halima Hamud, Delegate for Minnesota. “In these challenging times, it is crucial that we stand united in safeguarding the rights and safety of those seeking asylum in our country. Compromising their safety is not an option with such proposals.”

“President Biden’s statement is very concerning, and neglects all his previous promises about protecting asylum seekers’ rights. He is effectively trading asylum protections in exchange for emergency authority at the borders and funding support for current conflicts. Asylum seekers should never be a treated like a bargaining chip at the negotiation table. We strongly urge the President not to support such dangerous compromises that put people who are seeking safety in further danger,” said Ali Aljundi, Membership Engagement and Leadership Development Manager.

Refugee Congress strongly urges members of Congress to resist compromising our asylum laws and punishing those seeking refuge from persecution and danger. We call on Senators to reject this proposed deal and any other attempts to politicize people's lives, urging them instead to collaborate with leaders and experts with backgrounds of forced displacement to create policies that fortify our nation while respecting the rights of individuals.
